Trouble With Gmail Notifications

Gmail has changed the setup for third party Apps. If you are having trouble follow the following directions.


These directions are for setting up your Gmail account to be able to send emails using an SMTP server. The first step is to ensure that you have two-step verification enabled for your Gmail account. If you do, and you encounter an error when signing in that says "password incorrect," you can try using an app password.

 

To create an app password, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your Google Account.
  2. Select "Security."
  3. Under "Signing in to Google," select "App Passwords." You may need to sign in again.
  4. If you don't see this option, it could be because 2-Step Verification is not set up for your account, it's only set up for security keys, your account is through work, school, or another organization, or you turned on Advanced Protection.
  5. At the bottom, choose "Select app" and choose the app you're using. Then, select "Select device" and choose the device you're using. Click "Generate."
  6. Follow the instructions to enter the App Password. The App Password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
  7. Tap "Done."
     

Once you have your app password, you can use it instead of your actual Gmail username and password when setting up the SMTP server. The SMTP server name is "smtp.gmail.com," and the username is your Gmail address. The password is the app password that you just created. The SMTP port is 587. By following these steps, you should be able to set up your Gmail account to send emails using an SMTP server.

use port 465 (for SSL), or port 587 (for TLS)
